Sunday September 10th, 2006 Fifteenth Sunday of the Pentecost Season

Gospel: Luke 7: 36 – 50

Readings: 1 Thessalonians 1: 1 – 10

The Gospel we heard today on the fifteenth Sunday of the Pentecost Season is one of the most beautiful texts in Luke’s Gospel. The Pharisee who had invited him, thought to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him” and he wouldn’t have let hear was his feet with her hair.

She is a sinner; she is a low life according to Simon the Pharisee. Jesus answered John’s question with miracles that showed that he was a great prophet in the midst of the crowds. Luke didn’t want to show Jesus as a prophet only but as a mystery that he can only accept as the friend of sinners and tax collectors.

We notice that Luke didn’t mention the woman’s name or her social class. She represents each person who lived in human weakness and now is asking for forgiveness. Luke gathered in one place Jesus and the Pharisee who considers himself as above sin and a woman who is shunned by the Pharisees. This woman enters the Pharisee’s house looking for forgiveness and love. Her sins were forgiven because she loved unconditionally.

Triumph of the Cross, September 14th

St. Paul the Apostle spoke of the power of Christ’s Cross. According to tradition, the Empress Helena discovered the Lord’s Cross in Jerusalem on September 14, 320. Five years later, a great Church was built on Mount Calvary by Emperor Constantine to shelter the holy relic. Parts of the wood of the Cross were sent to the major cities of Christendom, where they were shown to the faithful on this special feast.

We worship you, O Christ, and we praise you, because by your Cross you have redeemed the world. By this holy tree you gave your people victory, and put aside the tree of our defeat.

Our Lady of Sorrows, September 15

The feast, popular in the Middle Ages, follows the feast of Mary’s birth on September 8. It recalls the special bond between Jesus and Mary and reminds us of the torment and suffering of Christ. Mary suffered greatly as the Mother of God, and the pain she felt was real. The Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows recalls the succession of sorrows Mary experienced during her life: the prophecy she heard from Simeon in the temple, the flight into Egypt, the three-day loss of Jesus on the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, the hours she stood beneath the Cross, the removal of Jesus from the Cross, and the burial of Jesus in a tomb.

Holy Mother, pierce me through; in my heart each wound renew of my Saviour crucified.

Prayer Before The Cross

Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus while before your face I humbly kneel and, with burning soul, pray and beseech you to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity; true contrition for my sins, and a firm purpose of amendment. While I contemplate with great love and tender pity, your five most precious wounds, pondering over them within me and calling to mind the words which David your prophet, said to you, my Jesus, “They have pierced my hands and my feet, they have numbered all my bones.” Amen.
