Seventh Sunday after the Holy Cross, Christ the King

Gospel: Mathew 25: 31 – 46

Readings: Romans 12: 9 – 21

This Gospel concludes Jesus’ life as a Teacher and it is used by the Church to close the Liturgical Year. It is the best learning tool on how to prepare to meet the Lord upon his second coming and the final judgment. This scene is not a parable; it is in fact a prophetic event.

Jesus invites us through this event to be ready to answer the final question of the final judgment. “Did you really love me?” St. John of the Cross notices that we will only be judged by love, which is general and is deeds. If we focus on the face of the Son of Man, we notice that he is the subject in this Gospel.

He is the glorified one, surrounded by angels, the King, the Judge, the Shepherd, the Son, and the incarnate in all cases of the human kind especially the hardest situations: hungry, thirsty, naked, stranger, sick, prisoner. What shocks us is the discovery that the subject becomes suddenly the object.

He is only all the least ones, he is instead the center for gathering and waiting for God’s mercy. He accepted willingly to live humbly.

All Saints, November 1st

This feast which has its beginning in the Christian churches of the fifth and sixth centuries celebrates all those saints, canonized or not, who enjoy the happiness of the kingdom of heaven.

Our relatives and friends, multitudes unknown “which no one can number from all tribes and peoples and tongues,” stand before God’s throne in joyful praise. They are remembered this day. God’s amazing grace has brought them home.

The feast of All Saints turns our eyes to that “great clouds of witnesses” who are with God, yet still with us. We share in their love and are inspired by their example. They attract us to journey to the kingdom of God.

For all the saints who from their labours rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest!

All Souls, November 2nd

The early Christians, like their pagan ancestors, remembered their dead on certain days of the year. The present date for our yearly commemoration of the dead was established in the tenth century.

We remember the dead with prayers so that God will “Strengthen our hope that al our departed brothers and sisters will share in Christ’s resurrection.”

In the words of Vatican Council II, “Fully conscious of the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ, the Church on earth honours with great respect the memory of the dead, because it is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, because it is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be freed from their sins, she offers her suffrages for them.

Lord God, Maker of all, Master of life and death, guard and gift of our souls, receive those who go before us on the pilgrimage of death; in due time receive us too when our days are done. Amen.
