Sunday of the Announcement to Zechariah

Gospel: Luke 1: 1 –25

Readings: Romans 4: 13 – 25

After starting the walk of consecration and renewal, and after taking off the old and wearing the new, the Church enters today the world of announcements. The good news do not begin with Jesus but with John the Baptist.

This first announcement prepares us for the great one. God’s promise is kept. His promise is executed. St. Luke mentioned in the beginning of the Gospel that Zechariah and his wife were together in this situation which they can not surpass, because they were getting on in years.

During that period of time, being barren was thought to be the consequence of sins. The woman who didn’t have a child lived in disgrace because every woman waited eagerly to bear the Messiah. This was the point of view of the people of that era.

God’s point of view was different. This family was not the fruit of rage or revenge. God himself remembered the father in his mercy by sending his angel to give the greatest news of all. She bore a child and kept it a secret because the greatest joys are lived in silence. This family was no longer barren but fertile.

Presentation of Mary, November 21st

This feast celebrates the dedication of the Church of St. Mary built in Jerusalem near the site of the Temple. According to an early tradition, Mary was born to Sts. Ann and Joachim in Jerusalem, in a neighbourhood close by the Temple. At twelve, she was presented there to learn the law of God. The present Church of St. Ann, a favourite place of pilgrimage, marks the ancient site today. The Scriptures which spoke of the “Daughter of Zion” singing and rejoicing in the presence of the Lord, probably suggested to ancient Christian piety eager to know the details of Mary’s early life which were portrayed in art by many great medieval artists.

Heavenly Father, you have given us a model of life in the Holy Family of Nazareth. Help us to make our family a New Nazareth. Immaculate Heart of Mary, cause of our joy, pray for us, be always with us, guide and protect us. Amen.

Prayer for the Sick

Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the Sick, we turn to you in this time of illness. O dearest Comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with your gentle love, and grant us the place and strength to accept this burden. Dear God, we place our worries in your hands. We place our sick under your care and humbly ask that you restore your servant (…) to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge your holy will and know that whatever you do, you do for the love of us. Amen.
