Seventh Sunday of the Easter Season Ascension / لصعود

Gospel: John 13: 31 – 35

Readings: Ephesians 1: 15 – 23

Today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles focuses on the faith, love and hope the most precious gifts from God through Jesus the risen Lord of the universe who is seated on the right hand of the Father.

This is an invitation to the Christian unity and the new life in Christ through continuous prayers and courage in the Gospel mission. The commandment to love one another even the enemies as Jesus had taught us to do through his life, death and resurrection, is the symbol of time.

God’s unconditional love is the conclusion of Jesus’ public life. It is manifested like the grain of wheat that dies to give abundantly. By his ascension, Jesus drew many to follow God’s glory leaving behind their earthly glory. God’s love is not chained or limited. It is the fountain of love.

The Visitation of Mary

Celebrated between the feasts of the Annunciation (March 25) and the Birth of John the Baptist (June 24), the feast of the Visitation originated in the Church of the Middle Ages. It recalls Mary’s visit to her cousin, Elizabeth, after the angel announced that she was to be the mother of Jesus. Filled with the Holy Spirit, these two great women recognized the power of God at work in their midst. “Blessed are you among women.” Elizabeth said, “and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” Mary replied:

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.

Salve Regina

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy. Hail my life, my sweetness and my hope! To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve! To you do we send up our sighs; mourning and weeping in this valley of tears! Turn most gracious Advocate, your eyes of mercy toward me, and after this, our exile, show us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus Christ. O Clement, loving, sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.
