The Visitation
of Mary
Celebrated
between the feasts of the Annunciation (March 25) and the Birth of
John the Baptist (June 24), the feast of the Visitation originated
in the Church of the Middle Ages. It recalls Mary’s visit to her
cousin, Elizabeth, after the angel announced that she was to be the
mother of Jesus. Filled with the Holy Spirit, these two great women
recognized the power of God at work in their midst. “Blessed are you
among women.” Elizabeth said, “and blessed is the fruit of your
womb.” Mary replied:
My soul
proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my
Savior for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this
day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done
great things for me, and holy is his Name. He has mercy on those who
fear him in every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the
mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has
filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away
empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israel for he has
remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children forever.
Salve Regina
Hail, Holy
Queen, Mother of Mercy. Hail my life, my sweetness and my hope! To
you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve! To you do we send up
our sighs; mourning and weeping in this valley of tears! Turn most
gracious Advocate, your eyes of mercy toward me, and after this, our
exile, show us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus Christ. O
Clement, loving, sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.
