Fifth Sunday of the Easter Season

Gospel: John 21: 15 – 19

Readings: Ephesians 2: 1 – 10

Peter denied Jesus, his Teacher, three times in the past and three times today he declared his love for him.

Jesus chose him as the shepherd of his Church verifying that love is the foundation of the Church. This love won’t be complete unless it is united with sacrifice one’s self to the point of martyrdom.

In John’s Gospel, Jesus said to the disciples on the way to Emmaus, “What do you want?” Jesus said his last word: “Follow me.”

Peter’s three times declaration of his love for Jesus today, when he appeared after his resurrection on the shores of the Tiberias Sea the morning of the miraculous fishing, erased Peter’s denial of Jesus. It also enables him to lead the Church.

St. Nehmetallah Hardini, May 16

Joseph Kassab was born in the year 1808. His father was George Kassab and his mother Mariam Raad. He entered the school of the monks of St. Anthony at Hboub from 1816 to 1822.

He entered the monastery of St. Anthony of Kozhaya and became a novice, November 1828. There he adopted the name of Fr. Nehmetallah Kassab Hardini and learned to bind books.

He professed his first vow on the 14th of November 1830. After he finished his theological studies, he was ordained a priest under Bishop Semaan Zouein in the monastery of Kfifan on December 25th, 1833.

He became a member of the General council three times from 1845 to 1848, 1850 to 1853. He taught in monastic schools. One of his students was St. Charbel. Father Nehmetallah lived a very holy life. He was a man of prayer, totally “enraptured by God.” St. Nehmetallah died in the monastery of Kfifan on December 14, 1858 after struggling ten days with a high fever.

He was fifty years of age. He died holding a picture of the Virgin Mary. His last words were: “O Virgin Mary, between your hands I submit my soul.” Through his intercession many cures occurred: blind, paralyzed, child raised from the dead, cancer and nerve system. He was canonized on May 16th, 2006 in Rome by His All Holiness Pope John Paul II.

Prayer to Our Lady of Good Counsel

Most glorious Virgin, you were chosen by the Eternal Counsel to be the Mother of the Eternal Word made flesh. You are the treasurer of divine graces and the advocate of sinners. I who am your most unworthy servant have recourse to you. Graciously be my guide and counsellor in this valley of tears.

Obtain for me, through the precious Blood of your Divine Son, the forgiveness of my sins, the salvation of my soul, and the means necessary to obtain it. In like manner, obtain for the Holy Church victory over the enemies and the spread of Jesus’ kingdom over the whole earth. Amen.
