Sunday March 26th

Sunday of the Paralytic Man

Gospel: Mark 2: 1 – 12

Readings1 Timothy 5: 24, 6:5

In this Gospel reading, Marks talks about the enthusiasm that Jesus stirred in the people in Capernaum. They were amazed by the power he used to teach, heal the sick and cast out demons. In this town that became Jesus’ and after he came to visit them, everyone knew him and they gathered to hear his teachings.

Four men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man. Because of their perseverance, the reader feels that he is carrying the paralyzed with them. We face a faith that challenges even Jesus.

This faith makes them dig even harder in the ceiling. No one thought about the forgiveness of sins. All they thought about was the physical healing. Nobody heard “Your sins are forgiven.”

No one expected a show of this kind. Jesus said to them, “Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? Which is easier to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Stand up and take your mat and walk.’

This miracle opens our hearts on the Spirit’s work in our hearts. If we don’t accept Jesus in our lives, nothing will change in our hearts. We will continue to watch without understanding.

St. Gabriel, Archangel, March 26

Holy Scripture speaks of angels as ministers of God in human affairs. St. Michael defended the honor of God against satan. St. Gabriel announced to Mary the coming of Jesus. St. Raphael guided Tobias on his journey and brought healing to Tobit, his blind father. As servants of God, the angels are instruments of God’s hidden providence. They preserve us from harm, give God’s wisdom and strength to humanity, and accompany us on our journey through life.

We thank you, Lord with all our hearts; in the presence of your angels we bless you.

Psalm 23

You, Lord, are my shepherd; I shall not want. In green meadows you give me repose; beside restful water you lead me; you refresh my soul. You guide me in right paths for your name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are at my side; with your rod and your staff you comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and kindness will follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.
