Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany of the Lord

Gospel: John 4: 5 – 7, 9 – 26

Readings: Romans 7 :1 – 6

The Church invites us to reflect on the revelation of Jesus’ secret to the Samaritan woman, and through her to all Samaritans. The meeting between Jesus and that woman beside the well reminds us of the ancestors’ reunion: Isaac and Rebecca, Jacob and Rachel in the Torah.

John thinks that the repentance of the Samaritans through Jesus is similar to a new marriage between God and his people. The Samaritan woman seemed pure, but she was married to five men and the citizens of her city know all about her reputation. Jesus also knows about it.

The evangelist divides the conversation into two parts: the first focused on the water of the well and that given by Jesus, which is his teachings, and the Holy Spirit and the holy water of Baptism.

The second part focused on the place of worship. Jesus focuses on the spiritual worship becomes invalid without the truth of Jesus. St. Paul describes the misery of man because of the law. We, as Christians, were freed of the law’s chains because we died with Jesus and we lived with him.

The Presentation of the Lord, February 2nd

Forty days after his birth, Jesus was presented in the temple by Mary and Joseph to fulfill Jewish Law. There he was recognized by Simeon and Anna, who were waiting for the coming Messiah. Simeon was just and pious, and awaited the consolation of Israel. It was revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not experience death until he had seen the anointed of the Lord. He came to the temple, now, inspired by the Spirit; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform for him the customary ritual of the law, he took him in his arms and blessed god in these words:

“Now, Master, you can dismiss your servant in peace; you have fulfilled your word. For my eyes have witnessed your saving deed displayed for all the people to see: a revealing light to the Gentile, the glory of the people of Israel.”

This feast, celebrated by the Christian Churches of East and West at an early date, has also been called “Candlemas Day” because candles are blessed and lighted this day on which Simeon called Jesus “A Light to the Gentiles.”

Prayer for Society

O Jesus, come back into our society, our family life, our souls, and reign there as our peaceful sovereign. Enlighten with the splendor of faith and the charity of your tender heart the souls of those who work for the good of the people, for your poor.

Impart in them your own Spirit, a Spirit of discipline, order and gentleness, preserving the flame of enthusiasm ever alight in their hearts.

                                                          Pope John XXIII
