Mary the Mother of God, January 1st
The Christian
year begins with a feast in honor of Mary, the Mother of God. First
among the saints, she is the loving Mother of Jesus and mother of us
all. God chose Mary for a special role in history. She was to give
birth to the Messiah, whom god would send to save all people from
sin and bring joy and peace to the world.
Like a new Eve,
Mary became the “Mother of all the living” because her child could
bring all generations new life. The prophets of the Old Testament
spoke of her in their promise that a Virgin would bear a son whose
name is Emmanuel, “God with us.”
God prepared
Mary with special Care and grace. Coming to her home at Nazareth,
the Angel Gabriel hailed her as “full of grace” the beloved of the
Holy Spirit. Even before her birth God made her holy and free from
sin.
Mary’s response
to the angel reveals her own inner spirit. “Behold the handmaid of
the Lord, be it done to me according to you word.” Freely and
wholeheartedly Mary gave herself to God and committed herself to her
son, Jesus, his life and his mission.
Message of His All Holiness Pope Benedict XVI for the
Celebration of the World Day of Peace
In this
traditional Message for the World Day of Peace at the beginning of
the New Year, I offer cordial greetings and good wishes to men and
women everywhere, especially those who are suffering as a result of
violence and armed conflicts.
My greeting is
one filled with hope for more serene world, a world in which more
and more individuals and communities are committed to the paths of
justice and peace.
The theme chose
for this year’s reflection, “In truth, Peace”, expresses the
conviction that wherever and whenever men and women are enlightened
by the splendor of truth, they naturally set out on the path of
peace.
An International Prayer for Peace
Lead me from death to life,
From falsehood to truth.
Lead me from despair to hope, from fear to trust.
Lead me from hate to love, from war to peace.
Let peace fill our heart, our world, our universe.
Peace, peace, peace!!! |
