Sunday of the Visitation to Elizabeth

Gospel: Luke 1: 39 –45

Readings: Ephesians 1: 1 – 14

During this season of announcements, Mary’s visit comes as a continuity to the announcement of the angel to her and a confirmation for Elizabeth on her son’s role. The baby started moving in his mother’s womb by the power of the Holy Spirit to let his mother unveils Mary and her baby’s secret.

The promises of the Old Covenant won’t belong only to the people of Israel but to all those who will accept the announcement of Jesus. The meeting between Mary and Elizabeth is different from any other meeting. It is a meeting of glory and thanksgiving to God who gave the barren one the grace of carrying the announcer of the New Covenant and to the Virgin to become the Mother of the founder of the New Testament.

Elizabeth did not choose the words to greet Mary jut to be gracious or hospitable. It is a true faithful cry of a person surprised by the divine presence, “Blessed is the fruit of your womb.” Elizabeth felt what was only felt by Mary. She declared her faith in the incarnation of the word even before He was born. She saw in Mary not only a relative but the Mother of the Lord, “The Mother of my Lord comes to me.”

She congratulated Mary on her belief in the announcement that she just accepted. By doing so, Elizabeth expressed her joy and the joy of her son who leaped in her womb when she heard Mary’s greeting.

The Immaculate Conception of Mary, December 8th

The solemn Feast of Mary’s Immaculate Conception, celebrated nine months before the feast of her birth (September 8), recalls the Christian belief that Mary was preserved free from all stain of original sin from the moment of her conception by her mother, Ann. Because of her unique role as the mother of Jesus Christ, God endowed her with special graces and gifts.

Like a new Eve, she brought new life to the world through her Divine Son. The feast is also a reminder that the whole Church shares in Mary’s privileges in some way. For this reason the feast day prayer asks God to “trace in our actins the lines of her love, in our hearts her readiness of faith.”

The bishops of the United States, with firm belief in Mary’s intercession, confided their new nation to her care under the title of her Immaculate Conception.

Mary Immaculate, star of the morning, chosen before the creation began, chosen to bring, for thy bridal adorning, woe to the serpent and rescue to man. Bend from thy throne at the voice of our crying, bend to this earth which thy footsteps have trod; stretch out your arms to us, living, dying, Mary Immaculate, Mother of God.

Lord, Divine Physician and Healer of the sick, we turn to you in this time of illness. O dearest comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with your gentle love, and grant us the grace and strength to accept this burden. We pray to the Lord.
