Tenth Sunday of the Pentecost Season
Transfiguration of the Lord

Gospel: Matthew 12: 22 – 32

Readings:1 Corinthians 12: 1 – 11

The revelation of the Transfiguration is renewed daily in the pure faithful hearts. It strengthened the apostles to endure the suffering and pain according to St. Paul: “The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed through the Transfiguration, told Saul on the way to Damascus to persecute Christians: “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” the disciple becomes faithful.

Jesus the transfigured, spoke to the Prophets, appeared to the centurion after his crucifixion, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised and darkness came over the whole land. Jesus is the still the same, yesterday, today and forever.

God help us if we ignore his transfigured light or plug our ears away from his voice saying to us: “This is my Son, the Beloved; with whom I am well pleased; listen to him!”

The Transfiguration of Jesus, August 6

The Divinity of Christ was made manifest to Sts. Peter, James and John when Jesus appeared to them on Mount Tabor and his face and clothes shone radiantly. His appearance before the apostles was a confirmation to them of his relation to the Church and his role as the Son of God. A fest in honour of the Transfiguration has been celebrated in the Christian Churches of the East since the fifth century. In the Middle Ages, as interest grew in the Holy Land and the various sites connected with the life of Jesus, this feast was established in the Western Roman Empire.

Lord Jesus Christ,

Through your Transfiguration on the mount, strengthen our hearts lest be broken by the scandal of the Cross. Enlightened by your grace, may we share in the brightness of your glory.

Prayer

I have not the courage to search through books for beautiful prayers… Unable either to say them all or choose between them. I do as a child would do who cannot read, I say just what I want to say to God, quite simply, and he never fails to understand.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux.
