Third Sunday of the Easter Season

Gospel: Luke 24: 13 – 35

Readings: 2 Timothy 5: 8 – 13

The news about the appearance of the glorified Lord after his resurrection to the disciples of Emmaus is considered an admirable page of the Gospel. Its purpose is like any others to confirm the disciples’ faith in Jesus’ resurrection and to reveal the two disciples’ eagerness to see their teacher.

St. Luke uses the words, breaking the bread, “People were faithful to the disciples’ teachings, prayers and breaking of the bread”, to remind us of the first Church tradition, celebrating the Holy Eucharist.

After Jesus ate with the two disciples, he removed the dark clouds from their hearts and replaced the doubt with hope. They recognized him when he broke and blessed the bread. This incident is the story of every Christian who is walking faithfully on the roads of life.

Let us put our trust in Jesus’ love and the power of the Holy Spirit. Let us confirm the presence of the Lord our trustworthy companion. He won’t leave us, especially when we are faced with life’s most difficult situations. He will take care of us. Jesus’ resurrection opens our eyes and hearts to know him and be witnesses to his glory. Amen.

Prayer to Mother Mary

O Virgin Mother of God, Mary Immaculate, we dedicate and consecrate ourselves to you under the title of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. May this Medal be for each one of us a sure sign of your affection for us and a constant reminder of our duties toward you.

Every while wearing it, may we be blessed by your loving protection and preserved in the grace of your Son. O Most Powerful Virgin, Mother of Our Savior, keep us close to you every moment of our lives. Obtain for us, your children, the grace of a happy death; so that in union with you, we may enjoy the bliss of heaven forever. Amen.

St. Joseph the Worker, May 1st

On May 1st, 1955 Pope Pius XII addressed the Catholic Association of Italian Workers and declared that this day would be known as the feast day of St. Joseph the Worker. In the Communist bloc, May 1st is celebrated as May Day, which glorifies the relationship between the worker and the socialist state.

It is obvious that the Church was very concerned with this, and wanted to demonstrate to its faithful that it was equally concerned about the plight of the working man and woman. Joseph, a carpenter, taught his trade to his son, Jesus, and provided for his family. It is especially important to remember this human element when contemplating the lives of both St. Joseph and the Holy Family.

Lord God, maker of all things, you give us skill of mind and body to labor and serve in this world. May we follow the way of St. Joseph who worked with Christ at his side, and may all we do be a sign of your greatness and power.
