Sunday of the Blind Man

Gospel: Mark 10: 46 – 52

Readings: 2 Corinthians 10: 1 – 7

Healing the blind is one of the signs of the close coming of the Kingdom according to Isaiah. Jesus reminded them of that in the synagogue in Nazareth, and when he sent to John the Baptist an answer with the disciples. This miracle is very important and significant in Mark’s Gospel because it comes after the sons of Zebedee, who couldn’t see the Messiah, ask for a special place for themselves in heaven.

On the way to Jerusalem, everyone recognizes his blindness toward Jesus’ secret. They sternly ordered the blind man to be quiet, fearing that his cry would stop or delay their arrival to Jerusalem. Jesus stopped and called him in the same way he calls everyone to walk with him on the path of salvation.

Jesus asks them constantly: “What do you want me to do for you?” For this reason, Jesus tried many times to deliver them from the temptation of victory and authority that control their senses. He guided them to enter in the sacrament of salvation. Jesus invites us to walk with him.

His All Holiness Pope John Paul II

Karol Joseph Wojtyla, known as John Paul II, was born in Wadowice, Poland on May 18, 1920. His mother died in 1929 and his brother died in 1932. His father a non-commissioned army officer died in 1941. The Nazi occupation forces closed the university in 1939 and young Karol had to work in a quarry.

In 1942, aware of his call to priesthood, he began courses in the clandstine seminary. He was ordained priest on November 1st, 1946. Soon after, Cardinal Sapieha sent him to Rome where he worked under the guidance of the French Dominican. In 1948, he returned to Poland and was vicar in various Parishes until 1951. Since the start of his pontificate on October 16, 1978, Pope John Paul II has completed 104 pastoral visits outside of Italy, including Lebanon in 1997 and Canada in 2002, and 146 within Italy.

As Bishop of Rome he visited 317 of the 333 Parishes. John Paul II has presided at 147 beatification ceremonies (482 saints) during his pontificate. No other Pope has encountered so many individuals like John Paul II: to date, more than 17,600 pilgrims have participated in the general audiences and religious ceremonies held (more than 8 million pilgrims during the Great Jubilee of the year 2000 alone) and the millions of faithful met during pastoral visits made in Italy and throughout the world.

It must also be remembered the numerous government personalities encountered during 38 official visits and in the 738 audiences and meetings held with Heads of State, and even the 246 audiences and meetings with Prime Ministers.

It is doubtful there has ever been a Pope who has so successfully translated his strength, determination and faith into such widespread respect and good will. His All Holiness entered eternal life on Saturday, April 2nd, 2005. Miracles have been already attributed to this holy man. The latest one was a cure from Parkinson’s disease for an Italian lady.
