Sunday October 23

Year of the Eucharist Sixth Sunday after the Holy Cross

Gospel:

Matthew 25: 14 - 30

Readings:

Readings: Galatians 6:1 - 10

The Master, going on a journey, summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them; the distribution was not equivalent. He gave each one according to his ability. He did not specify what they should do with the talents.

The talents were not a gift for the slaves; upon his return, he will summon them and settle account with them. This settlement suggests that the slaves should understand their master's wish; if not this settlement becomes unfair. A question comes to mind: what are the talents that the Lord gave us?

We, like those slaves, know our master's wish; he wants us to benefit from the talents given to us and double them. Working with the talents and doubling them, was a sign through which the master saw the loyalty of his slaves. "You have been trustworthy…" Being devoted to the master's talent and his wish differ between the good slave and the evil lazy one.

The master's verdict on the third slave came according to what the slave said. The master noticed that the slave did not act according to his knowledge but he assumed that those attributes are correct. In another word, the master knew ahead of time the knowledge of the slave of him and his way of acting. For this reason, he judged him.

Sts. Simon & Jude, October 28

Little is known of Sts. Simon and Jude except that they were chosen by Jesus as apostles and appear well down on the list of twelve. They do not figure prominently in the Gospel stories, as do some other apostles.

The apostles were not all of one mold. Some, like Peter and Paul, were active public figures immersed in the controversy and changing movements of their time. Others, perhaps like Simon and Jude, may have taken a quieter path.

Yet their voices too have been heard through all the earth. Not only brilliant, active and achieving apostles communicate the faith. Some, also apostles, may pass on this treasure in simpler, unnoticed ways; ordinary sowers, they cast the seed of faith undramatically on a world waiting for harvest.

Lord, may we follow and serve you.
