Sunday October 16th

Year of the Eucharist Fifth Sunday after the Holy Cross

Gospel:

Matthew 25: 1 - 13

Readings:

Philippians 2:12 - 18

The image of midnight and the arrival of the bridegroom in today's Gospel is the symbol of the passage from this life to the other life. What was impossible before midnight was possible afterwards.

This is the purpose of this parable: "Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour." Staying awake until midnight will make achievable the passage to the true light. The image of the bridesmaids who were allowed to enter and those who were forbidden does not scare us but encourage us to keep awake.

The oil symbolizes the way we live our faith. This Gospel helps us to examine our conscience to read once more the book of our lives. Do we know how to examine our consciences? According to what standards? Why were the bridesmaids judged? Their actions are clear: "They went out to meet the bridegroom."

For this reason all they are asked to do is to live and be ready to face all possibilities especially the potential of the tardiness of the bridegroom. The foolish bridesmaids were banned from entering because they didn't compromise between their work and their behaviour.

St. Luke, Evangelist (October 18)

Born of a pagan family, St. Luke became a convert to the Christian faith. He accompanied St. Paul on his second missionary journey and was with the apostle during his final imprisonment in Rome.

Paul calls him "my dear friend Luke" in one of his epistles. Luke compiled the third Gospel. He describes at length the infancy of Jesus and emphasizes the Lord's prayerfulness and his mercy.

In the Acts of the Apostles Luke relates the beginnings of the infant Church as it develops under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

One tradition says that Luke died at Boeotia, in Greece, at the age of eighty-four. He is patron of painters and physicians.

Prayer

Be deaf to anyone who does not speak of Jesus Christ. He was descended from David, truly was he born of Mary.
He ate and drank, truly was he tried by Pontius Pilate.

He was crucified, truly he died, as heaven and earth looked on.
He was raised from the dead, truly his Father wakened him.
And his Father will raise us, too, who believe in him in Christ Jesus.
Truly we have no life except in Jesus Christ.

"St. Ignatius, to the Trallians"
