Sunday October 16th

Year of the Eucharist Fifth Sunday after the Holy Cross

Gospel:

Matthew 25: 1 - 13

Readings:

Philippians 2:12 - 18

The image of midnight and the arrival of the bridegroom in today's Gospel is the symbol of the passage from this life to the other life. What was impossible before midnight was possible afterwards.

This is the purpose of this parable: "Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour." Staying awake until midnight will make achievable the passage to the true light. The image of the bridesmaids who were allowed to enter and those who were forbidden does not scare us but encourage us to keep awake.

The oil symbolizes the way we live our faith. This Gospel helps us to examine our conscience to read once more the book of our lives. Do we know how to examine our consciences? According to what standards? Why were the bridesmaids judged? Their actions are clear: "They went out to meet the bridegroom."

For this reason all they are asked to do is to live and be ready to face all possibilities especially the potential of the tardiness of the bridegroom. The foolish bridesmaids were banned from entering because they didn't compromise between their work and their behaviour.
