Year of the Eucharist
Seventh Sunday after the Pentecost
Gospel: Matthew, 12: 14 - 21
Readings: Romans 8: 1 - 11 The Sundays that come between the fifth and the tenth of Pentecost Season concentrate on the Spirit's presence in the mission of the twelve disciples, their testimony to the Church through the strong relationship between the feast of two disciples Peter and Paul and the feast of the twelve apostles. This Sunday we focus on the apostles' spirituality.
Matthew is the only evangelist to use Isaiah's testimony to describe Jesus' mercy and meekness. The apostles' mission is not easy: "I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves", "they will persecute you, the same way they persecuted me, do not be afraid, I conquered the world."
In today's Gospel, we see the Pharisees increase their animosity against Jesus, who did not reply with the same ill will, instead he chose to stay away from them and continue his apostolic mission with his apostles according to the Spirit of love and meekness.

St. Thomas (First Century, Apostle)
July 3rdSt. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles, was a Jew from Galilee called by Jesus to accompany him on his mission to proclaim the Kingdom of God.
When Jesus' life was threatened as he went to raise Lazarus from the dead, Thomas said to the others, "Let us also go, that we may die with him." At the Last Supper, when Jesus spoke of going away to his Father, Thomas replied, "Lord, we do not know where you are going, and how can we know the way?"
With the rest of the apostles, Thomas fled when Jesus was arrested and put to death. On Easter Sunday, Thomas was not with the others when Jesus came into the room where they were. Though they told him jubilantly,
"We have seen the Lord!" Thomas answered, "I will not believe until I put my finger into the nail marks in his hands and his side." The expression, "Doubting Thomas, comes from this incident.
One week later, when Jesus appeared again to his disciples, Thomas was with them. Jesus said, "Take your finger and examine my hands. Put your hand into my side.
Do not remain an unbeliever. Believe!" Thomas said, "My Lord and my God!" "The unbelief of Thomas has done more for our faith than the faith of the other disciples," St. Gregory the Great has said. Our doubts are answered by the demand of Thomas to know that Jesus' resurrection was real.
Prayer to the Mother of Jesus O Mother of Jesus, now glorified in heaven in body and in soul, as the image and beginning of the Church, which is to have its fulfillment in the future age, here on earth, until the day the Lord comes.
Do not cease to shine before the pilgrim people of God as a sign of sure hope and consolation.
O you, who more than any other human being have been consecrated to the Holy Spirit, help your Son's Church to preserve in the same consecration.
Holy Spirit of God, you who is worshiped and glorified with the Father and Son!
Accept these words of humble consecration addressed to you in the heart of Mary of Nazareth, your bride and Mother of the Redeemer, whom the Church too call her Mother, because right from the upper room at Pentecost she has learned from her, her own motherly vocation!
Accept these words of the pilgrim Church.Amen.
