Mary the Mother of
God, January 1st
The Christian year begins with a feast
in honor of Mary, the Mother of God. First among the saints,
she is the loving mother of Jesus and mother of us all. God chose
Mary for a special role in history. She was to give birth to
the Messiah, whom God would send to save all people from sin
and bring joy and peace to the world. Like a new Eve, Mary became
the Mother of all the living because her child could
bring all generations new life.
The prophets of the Old Testament spoke
of her in their promise that a virgin would bear a son whose
name is Emmanuel, God with us. God prepared Mary
with special care and grace. Coming to her home at Nazareth,
the Angel Gabriel hailed her as Full of Grace, the
beloved of the Holy Spirit. Even before her birth God made her
holy and free from sin. Marys response to the angels reveals
her own inner spirit. Behold the handmaid of the Lord,
be it done to me according to your word. Freely and wholeheartedly
Mary gave herself to God and committed herself to her son, Jesus,
his life and mission.
Message
of His All Holiness Pope John Paul II
For the Celebration of the World Day of Peace
At the beginning of the New Year, I once
again address the leaders of nations and all men and women of
good will, who recognize the need to build peace in the world.
For the theme of this 2005 World day of
peace, I have chosen Saint Pauls words in the letter to
the Romans: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil
with good. Peace is a good to be promoted with good: for
individuals, for families, for nations and for all humanity.
During this year dedicated to the Eucharist,
may the sons and daughters of the Church find in the supreme
Sacrament of love the wellspring of all communion: communion
with Jesus the Redeemer and, in him, with every human being.
In a word, by sharing in the one bread and the one cup, we come
to realize that we are Gods family and that
together we can make our own effective contribution to building
a world based on the values of justice, freedom and peace.
From the Vatican, Pope John Paul II
