Third Sunday after the Resurrection

Lord, you know that I love you

Gospel:

Colossians 3: 1 - 17

Readings:

John 21: 15- 19

Today's subject is the meeting between Jesus the Risen Lord and Peter the fisherman. In St. Paul's letter to the Colossians, we hear him presenting to us a way of life that leads us to Jesus.

From this day on, there won't be any fights arising between humankind, due to different religions, races or societies. What is important for us is to discard sins and strive for virtues such as forgiveness, love and peace, strong belief in God, and prayer; this is the ideal Christian life.

After denying Jesus three times, Peter was remorseful and repented in all honesty. Jesus tried in today's Gospel to return to him the true knowledge by handing him three responsibilities in guiding Jesus' people officially. After Peter's great fall, in his weakness, Jesus confirmed openly and finally the authority of Peter who has the mission of becoming the successor of the first Shepherd.

Let us ask the Lord today to send workers for his harvest by giving the Church of His Son true priesthood vocations, true shepherds to direct his people toward heaven walking the path of sanctity, love and peace until we all enter the heavenly kingdom praising God with choir of angels.

St. George, April 23rd

Historically, very little is known of St. George's life. According to tradition, he was a Christian soldier who suffered martyrdom about the year 303 in Palestine, sometime before the reign of the Emperor Constantine.

A legend beginning in the twelfth century by a book called The Golden Legend tells of George as a Christian soldier born in Cappadocia. In Sylene, Libya, he rescued the king's daughter from a dragon and in turn killed it.

As a result, thousand of people were baptized and led to God. Devotion to George spread to the West during the Crusades when he was invoked for protection by King Richard I of England and his army.

St. George is the patron saint of England as well as Portugal, Germany, Aragon, Genoa and Venice.

Lord, we praise your power that enabled your saints to be strong in life and in face of death. Give us help too in our weakness.

Prayer for the election of the New Pope

Lord God,
You are our eternal shepherd and guide.
In your mercy grant your Church a shepherd who will walk in your ways and whose watchful care will bring us your blessing.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Prayer

O Holy God, loving Father,
May your son, Pope John II rest eternally with You in deep peace and great joy. In his wonderful life, he showed us how to pray with deep faith, to live the Gospel faithfully, to care for the suffering and the poor and to speak out against injustice in all its forms. As he loved, so may we love. As he forgave those who wronged him so may we forgive.
As he praised and blessed your name, so may we praise and bless you always. Eternal rest grant upon him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him.

Amen.
