Year of the Eucharist
Fifth Sunday after the Pentecost, Fathers Day

Gospel:

1 Corinthians 10: 16 - 25

Readings:

Matthew 10: 16 - 25

This Sunday, we celebrate the sending off of the twelve disciples. He invited them to be close to him and be true witnesses to him. He gave them his authority which he received from the Father.

He sent them filled with his love, encouragement through the Holy Spirit to guarantee the success of their mission. Jesus sends his disciples in a ceremonial way.

He warned them about the persecutions from the Jewish councils, and the atheist kings. He provides them with help and assistance at the same time, by sending his Holy Spirit. They won't be alone in facing the persecutions.

The Spirit will be with them. The advocate, the Teacher and the counselor will be with them. Jesus invites everyone to his kingdom, to listen to his teachings and live by them.

The evil dominating the human heart leads us to sin, and to ruin our relationship wit hour fellow human. Jesus' message is an example to the disciples' mission after his death and resurrection.

The Birth of John the Baptist, June 24

The birthday of John the Baptist, six months before the birth of Jesus, has been celebrated on June 24 from the earliest days of the Church.

Jesus himself called John, who prepared the way for him by his preaching, the greatest of men. A "voice in the desert", John, as the final prophet of the Old Testament, told the people of his time that their Lord was near.

The announcement of John's birth by the Angel Gabriel to Zachary, his father, was received with disbelief because Zachary's wife, Elizabeth, was beyond childbearing age. Yet the angel insisted, "You shall call his name John for he will be great before the Lord and filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb."

Jesus began his own mission by being baptized by John. Recognizing the Son of God, whose "sandals he was not worthy to untie," John Said, "He must increase, and I must decrease." John's life prepared for Jesus who was eternal life.

Early commentators never failed to note that after June 24, the feast of John the Baptist, the sun's light begins to decrease until December 25, the birth of Jesus, when the light of the sun increases again.

Lord, may you increase your life within us.

Prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

O Most Holy Heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore you, I love you, and with lively sorrow for my sins, I offer you, this poor heart of mine.

Make me humble, patient, pure and wholly obedient to your will. Grant, Good Jesus, that I may live in you and for you. Protect me in the midst of danger.

Comfort me in my afflictions. Give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, your blessing on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death. Amen.
