Second Sunday after the Holy Cross

"For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man."

(Matthew 24: 25)

Gospel:

Matthew, 24: 23 - 31

Readings:

1 Corinthians 15: 19 -34

In today's Gospel, Jesus warns us about believing those who proclaim the coming of the Messiah.

He advises us to have a watchful eye for the false prophets who try hard to make the chosen ones lose sight of the true Messiah whose coming will be like a lightning. Jesus invites us through this warning to avoid trying to create a messiah that fits out profiles.

Before the sign of the Son of Man appears, Jesus gives natural signs: the sun will darken, the moon won't illuminate with its light, and the stars will fall from the sky.

These signs aren't a true description of what will happen. It is instead a symbolic writing. Before God created the human kind, the earth was empty without the sun, the moon or the stars.

The symbolic act of this picture means that the earth will go to its original state and the second coming will be a new creation and new birth pangs for a new life.

St. Therese of the Child Jesus, Virgin
October 1st

Marie-Françoise-Therese Martin, born on January 2, 1873 at Alençon, France, was the youngest of nine children born to Louis and Azélie-Marie Martin. Her father was a successful watchmaker and her mother a seamstress.

Therese was four when her mother died. She was cared for by two older sisters and an aunt. On Christmas Day, 1886, the young girl experiences a profound conversion. She developed a great love for the missionary life of the Church. By special dispensation she entered the Carmelites on April 9, 1888, and was professed on September 8, 1890.

For the next seven years, she lived a life of prayers. She guided the novices of her community for the last four years of her life until she died on September 30, 1897, from a painful condition of tuberculosis.

Lord Jesus, I am not an eagle.
All I have are the eyes and the heart of one.

In spite of my littleness, I dare to gaze at the sun of love, and long to fly toward it. I want to imitate the eagles, but all I can is flap my small wings.
What shall I do?

With cheerful confidence I shall stay gazing at the sun, till I die. Nothing will frighten me, neither wind nor rain. O my beloved sun, I delight in feeling small and helpless in your presence; and my heart is at peace.

"St. Therese of the Child Jesus"

Prayer to St. Therese

O Little St. Therese of the Child Jesus, who during your short life on earth became a mirror of angelic purity, of love strong as death, and of wholehearted abandonment to God, now that you rejoice in the reward of your virtues, cast a glance of pity on me as I leave all things in your hands.

Make my troubles your own. Speak a word for me to our Lady Immaculate, whose flower of special love you were, to that Queen of heaven, who smiled at you at the dawn of life.

Beg her to obtain for me by her powerful intercession, the grace I yearn for so ardently at this moment, and that she joins with it a blessing that may strengthen me during life. Defend me at the hour of death, and lead me straight on to a happy eternity.

Amen.
