First Sunday after the Holy Cross

" This good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world, as a testimony to all the nations ."

(Matthew 2 4: 25)

Gospel:

Matthew, 24: 1 - 14

Readings:

2 Timothy 2: 1 -8

"Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of age?" The disciples asked Jesus this question two thousand years ago.

He answered them with signs preceding this coming. Jesus did not specify the period of time between these signs and the end of the age.

Among these signs there are wars, diseases and famine. Not a year has gone by without some of these signs being manifested.

In addition to those sings, Jesus offered to his disciples a preview of what will happen to them from prosecution and hate to doubt and torture. All this is the beginning of birth pangs.

The end will come after the Gospel has reached the whole world. To ease their pain, Jesus told his disciples: "The one who endures to the end will be saved." Our proclamation to Jesus is "We wait for your second coming, O Lord."

St. Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist
September 21

The call of St. Matthew, the Tax collector, to be one of the twelve apostles of Jesus is described in the Gospel which bears his name. "Jesus saw a man named Matthew at his post where taxes were collected. He said to him, 'Follow me!' and Matthew got up and followed him."

When Jesus invited Matthew to follow him and then ate at his house where Matthew's friends, outsiders like himself, were gathered, he heard the outraged comments of Capernaum's local leaders, "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?" Jesus answered simply, "Those who are will have no need for a doctor; sick people do."

According to tradition, Matthew wrote down the stories and words of Jesus in Aramaic, the ancient language of Palestine. The first Gospel had its origins in him.

There are reports that Matthew left Judea and preached in the East, where he was martyred in Ethiopia.

O God, may we follow your call.

Prayer to Jesus for Vocations

Lord of the harvest, send holy priests who are zealous co-operators of the Episcopal order, that they may sanctify and lead their brothers and sisters in faith which they proclaim.

Send, Lord, shepherds to your Church who, as they teach, encourage and evangelize, in communion with bishops and priests, walk in your truth.

We pray, Lord, that you continue to bless and enrich your Church with the gift of vocations.

We pray that many may welcome your call and bring joy to your Church by their generous and faithful response. Amen.

Pope John Paul II

Prayer for September 21st
International Day of Prayer for Peace

O Lord,

You love justice and you establish peace one earth. We bring before you the disunity of today's world; the absurd violence, and the many wars, which are breaking the courage of the peoples of the world; human greed and injustice, which breed hatred and strife.

Send your Spirit and renew the face of the earth; teach us to be compassionate towards the whole human family; strengthen the will of all those who fight for justice and for peace, and give us that peace which the world cannot give.

Amen.
