Sunday of the Announcement to Mary

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.”

(Luke 1:35)

Gospel:

Matthew, 1: 26 – 38

Readings:

Galatians 3: 15 – 22

After the announcement to Zechariah, the true announcement took place. This time, the announcement was accepted by a virgin tin Nazareth. She was to give birth to the Son of God. This announcement was meant for her people and the world, because the one born from her was the Messiah.

With him, the promise of the Lord to Abraham was realized. The conversation between Mary and the angel started with Mary feeling frightened. But this fear was fast transformed into a family like peace. Mary asked the angel two questions.

The angel answered her. The conversation ended by Mary accepting the announcement. She is the servant of the Lord. She was to accept what the Lord has in store for her.

Mary was waiting for the coming of the Messiah; little she knew about the pregnancy and her future and that of the child. She understood that God is asking her to a different motherhood, different from the motherhood of Eve and that of all the mothers of the world.

Through her motherhood, the humanity will become once again the main focus of God’s love and mercy. The people will know how close God is to them. He lives in them.

Mary’s acceptance of the announcement gave privilege to having faith in Jesus and sharing with him the details of his life to his death and resurrection. Her invitation is a committed participation in her Son’s mission.

Presentation of Mary, November 21

This feast celebrates the dedication of the church of St. Mary built in Jerusalem near the site of the Temple. According to an early tradition, probably legendary, Mary was born to Sts. Ann and Joachim in Jerusalem, in a neighbourhood close by the temple.

At twelve, she was presented there to learn the law of God. The present Church of St. Ann, a favourite place of pilgrimage, marks the ancient site today.

The Scriptures which spoke of the “Daughter of Zion” singing and rejoicing in the presence of the Lord, probably suggested to ancient Christian piety eager to know the details of Mary’s life that the Virgin was born in the city of Zion, Jerusalem.

The apocryphal Gospel of James reported the details of Mary’s early life which were portrayed in art by many great medieval artists.

Mary, Mother of God, you are the temple of the Lord and dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. Help us to please God.
