Sunday of the Announcement to Zechariah
Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. You wife Elizabeth will bear a son. (Luke 1:15)
Gospel: Matthew, 1: 1 25
Readings: Romans 4: 13 25 After starting the walk of consecration and renewal and after taking off the old and wearing the new, the church enters today the world of announcements.
The good news does not start with Jesus but with John the Baptist. This first announcement prepares us for the great one. Gods promise is kept. His promise is executed. St. Luke mentioned in the beginning of the Gospel that Elizabeth was barren.
We notice that Zechariah and his wife were together in this situation which they cannot surpass, because they were getting on in years. During that period of time, being barren was thought to be the consequences of sins.
The woman who doesnt have a child lived in disgrace because every woman waited eagerly to bear the Messiah. This was the point of view of the people of that era.
Gods point of view was different. This family was not the fruit of rage or revenge. God himself remembered the father in his mercy by sending his angel to give the greatest news of all. She bore a child and kept it a secret because the greatest joys are lived in silence.
This family was no longer barren but fertile. This fertility wasnt only material but spiritual also. John was not an ordinary child. He was the closest image to Jesus. He grew like him in wisdom and intelligence. The hand of the Lord was with him.

Dedication of the Churches of Sts. Peter & Paul, November 17 The two great apostles, Sts. Peter and Paul, are honoured today in the ancient churches where their bodies are buried.
The Basilica of St. Paul and the Vatican Basilica of St. Peter were build originally in the fourth century and are reminders of the apostles who founded the Roman Church and are still its protectors.
The early Christians marked the place where their founding apostles were martyred with special care. Peter, ancient sources report, was martyred on the Vatican Hill in 64 near the obelisk not far from the circus of Caligula and Emperor Nero.
He was buried nearby in a cemetery. The Emperor Constantine erected the first basilica of St. Peter over the burial site in 326 while Sylvester was Pope. Later in 1626, the present basilica designed during the Renaissance was built.
Recent excavations have uncovered the ancient burial place of Peter under the papal altar of this Church. Paul, according to tradition, was beheaded along the Ostian Way in 67.
Constantine built a large basilica there over his grave in 386. It was rebuilt after a fire in 1823 according to its former measurements. The apostles grave is behind the basilicas triumphal arch.
Prayer of the Souls in PurgatoryO gentle Heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have mercy on them.
Be not severe in Your judgements, but let some of Your Precious blood fall upon the devouring flames.
And, Merciful Saviour, send Your angels to conduct them to a place of refreshment, light and peace.
Amen.
