In this Gospel reading, Mark
talks about the enthusiasm that Jesus stirred in the people at
Capernaum. They were amazed by the power he used to teach, heal
the sick and drive out the demons. In this town that became Jesus'
town and after he came to visit them, everyone knew him and they
gathered to hear his teachings.
Four men came, bringing to him
a paralyzed man. Because of their perseverance, the reader feels
that he is carrying the paralyzed with them. We face a faith
that challenges even Jesus. This faith makes them dig even harder
in the ceiling. No one thought about forgiving the sins.
All they thought about was the
physical healing. Nobody heard "Your sins are forgiven."
No one expected a show of this kind. Jesus said to them, "Why
do you such questions in your hearts? Which is easier, to say
to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Stand
up and take your mat and walk'?" this miracle opens our
hearts on the Spirit's work in our hearts.
If we don't accept Jesus in our
lives, nothing will change in our hearts. We will continue to
watch without understanding. |

Feast of the Annunciation, March
25
One of the "Christmas Feasts"
celebrated outside of the Christmas season, the feast of the
Annunciation recalls the coming of the Angel Gabriel to Mary
at Nazareth to announce that she was to be the Mother of Jesus.
St. Luke records the historic
moment: "The Angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of
Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named
Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. Upon
arriving, the angel said to her: "Rejoice, O highly favored
daughter! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women."
She was deeply troubled by his words, and wondered what his greeting
meant.
The angel went on to say to her:
"Do not fear, Mary. You have found favour with God. You
shall conceive and bear a son and give him the name Jesus. Great
will be his dignity and he will be called Son of the Most High.
The Lord will give him the throne
of David his father. He will rule over the house of Jacob forever
and his reign will be without end." Mary said to the angel
"How can this be since I do not know man?"
The angel answered her: "The
Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High
will overshadow you." The Feast of the Annunciation is an
ancient feast of the Church. March 25, the time of the spring
equinox.
Was seen as a significant day
by the early Christians who regarded it as the day the world
was created, the day of Christ's conception in Mary's womb, and
the day of his death on the Cross.
God our Father,
Your Word became man and was born of the Virgin Mary.
Psalm
23
You, Lord, are my shepherd; I
shall not want. In green meadows, you give me repose; beside
restful waters you lead me; you refresh my soul. You guide me
in right paths for your name's sake.
Even though I walk through the
darkest valley, I fear no evil: for you are at my side; with
your rod and your staff you comfort me. You prepare a feast for
me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and kindness
will follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in
the house of the Lord my whole life long.
