Third Sunday after Pentecost, Father’s Day

“June 20th, 2004 Third Sunday after Pentecost, Father’s Day
“When he Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, he will testify on my behalf.” (John15:25)

Gospel:

John 15: 26, 16: 4

Readings:

1 Corinthians 2: 6: 11

When Jesus said to his disciples that he was soon returning to his Father who sent him, they were very distressed. The absence of Jesus from the hearts will fill the souls with emptiness, sadness and pain.

Jesus is the life, the resurrection, the happiness and the light of the world. Whoever loses him, will lose everything. Jesus felt their pain and he promised them to send them the Spirit to fill them with graces and clear their consciences.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus informs the disciples about what will happen to them after they were witnesses to his life. Jesus will send them the Spirit because the Spirit testifies on his behalf too.

The Holy Spirit is no stranger to Jesus. He is with the Father and Jesus One God. Whatever is known by God is also known by the Spirit. We need the Holy Spirit, the Spirit can’t find a place to dwell in many hearts, because people are only interested in earthly things.

Let us pray to God to send his Spirit to change the face of the earth by giving us the strength to answer his call and carry the Cross and shame of Jesus. By doing so, we will be worthy to be called God’s children.

The Birth of John the Baptist, June 24

The Birthday of John the Baptist, six months before the birth of Jesus, has been celebrated on June 24 from the earliest days of the Church. Jesus himself called John, who prepared the way for him by his preaching, the greatest of men.

A “Voice in the desert”, John as the final prophet of the Old Testament, told the people of his time that their Lord wad near.

The announcement of John’s birth by the Angel Gabriel to Zachariah, his father, was received with disbelief because Zachariah’s wife, Elizabeth, was beyond childbearing age.

In the wastelands of Judea, people from all ranks of society, soldiers and priests, tax collectors and workers came to hear John and their hearts were moved by his call to repent. Jesus began his own mission by being baptized by John.

Recognizing the Son of God, whose “sandals he was not worthy to untie”, John said, “He must increase, and I must decrease.” John’s life prepared for Jesus who was eternal life.

Early commentators never failed to note that after June 24, the feast of John the Baptist, the sun’s light begins to decrease until December 25, the Birth of Jesus, when the light of the sun increases again.

Dad

A Dad is a person, who is loving and kind, and often he knows what you have on your mind.

He is someone who listens, suggests, and defends. A dad can be one of your very best friends!

He is proud of your triumphs, but when things go wrong, a dad can be patient and helpful and strong in all that you do, a dad’s love plays a part.

There is always a place for him deep in your heart. And each year that passes, you’re even more glad, more grateful and proud just to call him your dad!

Thank you, Dad…

For listening, and caring, for giving and sharing, but especially, for just being you!

Happy Father’s Day.
