Second Sunday after Pentecost, St. Anthony of Padua’s Feast

“Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them to make our home with them.” (John14:24)

Gospel:

John 14: 21 – 26

Readings:

Readings: 1 Corinthians 2: 1-15

Today’s Gospel is a Gospel of love; the love of God based on living according to God’s Commandments, a love taught by the Holy Spirit and all that was said by Jesus when He visited the earth.

God is love; love is continuous fountain of generosity that never dries. God’s love never ends and never dries up. After many temptations, the man fell and there was sin. Jesus came down from heaven to show us the extent to which God’s love can reach.

We sinned, God sent His Son to save us. He gave us the Holy Spirit to console us. Love cannot be made or bought. It is an unlimited free gift from God. Whoever loves does not hate or live by “evil for evil”. By loving, man becomes, unlike the Pharisees and the high priests, completed in love. Jesus came into the world as a light. Whoever believes in him, doesn’t live in darkness.

Our Messiah is truth and love. God does not categorize us according to our position, wealth, connections, and intelligence but according to our kindness of heart and love. Let us love God. This is the first and most important commandment. And the second one is similar. By loving the neighbor we continue to love God.

St. Anthony of Padua, Priest and Doctor, June 13

St. Anthony of Padua was born at Lisbon, Portugal, in1195. His surname comes from the Italian city where he lived the latter part of his life.

His parents were members of the Portuguese nobility. His early education took place at the Cathedral of Lisbon. At the age of fifteen, he joined the Regular Canons of St. Augustine and was transferred to the monastery of Coimbra two years later because of distractions caused by his friends’ visits. At the monastery, Anthony devoted himself to prayer and study and became a learned scholar of the Bible.

In 1221, he was accepted to the Franciscans. Soon after, he set out for Morocco to preach the Gospel to the Moors. On the way, he was forced to return to Europe because of illness. On his return home, a storm drove his ship to the shores of Italy, where he would live for the rest of his life.

Upon his return, Anthony went to Assisi, where the general chapter meeting of 1221 took place where he was assigned to the hermitage of San Paolo near Forli. A gifted preacher, Anthony was also called upon to teach theology to his fellow Franciscans.

Anthony drew large crowds wherever he went in Italy, but his greatest success was in Padua where they welcomed him as another St. Francis. After the death of St. Francis, Anthony became the minister provincial of Emilia. Soon after he was released from this duty so he could continue his preaching.

He returned to Padua, where he preached until his death on June 13, 1231, at the age of thirty-six. He is a Doctor of the Church.

Unfailing Prayer to St. Anthony of Padua

O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth to possess miraculous powers.

Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me (Request).

O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart, will ever be yours.

Amen.
