Seventh Sunday After Pentecost

“I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”

(Matthew 10:16)

Gospel:

Matthew 10: 16 – 20

Readings:

2 Corinthians 3: 12 – 18

In today’s Gospel we notice the presence of two verbs that divide this Sunday’s Gospel. The first verb “Watch” gives a negative feeling and the second one “Do not be afraid” gives a positive feeling to the work of the Spirit in the apostles.

These two parts are concluded in the first verse of the Gospel. “I am sending you like sheep amongst wolves; be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” In other words, “Beware… I am sending you… because the Spirit of your Father speaks through you… be wise as serpents.”

Jesus insisted on keeping the balance between being wise and being innocent, because if we are only wise as serpents we may become cunning; or if we are too innocent we may become pathetic; the Holy Spirit teaches us to have this balance in our lives.

When we live the true Christian life, we face many interior and exterior difficulties and obstacles. Are we able to differentiate between these obstacles and the other ones that are the results of everyday life?

Do we feel that the Spirit is helping us to conquer the difficult patches in our lives? Do we feel that the Spirit helps us to continue our mission in spite of all obstacles?

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

Breathe into me, Holy Spirit,
That my thoughts may all be holy.
Move in me, Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.

Attract my heart, Holy Spirit,
That I may love only what is holy.

Strengthen me, Holy Spirit,
That I may love only what is holy.
Protect me, Holy Spirit,
That I may always be holy.

“St. Augustine.”
