Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears.”

(John 16:13)

Gospel:

John 16: 12 – 15

Readings:

1 Corinthians 14: 1 – 5

Jesus says many things; on the Cross He said: “Everything is done.” He also said: “I have many things to say to you.” How do we understand these conflicts?

Jesus was the completion of all inspiration. He said everything about the Father. The Holy Spirit will come to help the faithful understand the inspiration. He takes what is Jesus’ and what is the Lord’s and reveals it to the faithful.

The Holy Spirit guides us to the truth. There are two levels for the truth: the truth as a civil lawful principle and the truth as the inspiration of Jesus who said about himself: “I am the way, the truth and the life.” In one word, the truth creates in us a balance between faith and social conduct.

Jesus also says that the Spirit tells the faithful what he hears. The Spirit is based on Jesus’ inspiration and makes it ready in the life of the faithful. The Spirit helps the faithful read the future not as a clairvoyant but as a prophet.

In another word, the Spirit makes the faithful a prophet in the true meaning of prophet. During the Last Supper, the night Jesus said to his goodbye to his disciples who were distressed, but he promised them that their words will be somewhat of his words, and their presence of his.

St. Maria Goretti, Virgin and Martyr, July 6

St. Maria Goretti was born at Corinaldon, Italy in 1890, into a poor family of farm laborers. Her father, Luigi, moved the family to Ferreire. Luigi died in 1896 and his wife had to work hard in the fields to support the family of six children. On July 5, 1902, Maria was attacked in her home by eighteen-year-old Alexander Serenelli.

Maria, not quite twelve years old, was dragged and was repeatedly stabbed with a long dagger. She was rushed to the hospital, and as she lay dying, she prayed that Alexander would be forgiven and her family would be provided for.

On July 6, 1902, after receiving viaticum, she died in the presence of her mother, two nuns, the parish Priest and a Spanish noblewoman. Her death profoundly moved the people of Italy and stirred worldwide notice. Alexander was sentenced to thirty years in prison and remained unrepentant.

One night, he had a dream of Maria gathering flowers and offering them to him. He became a changed man and was released from prison after twenty-seven years because of good conduct. Alexander was alive when Maria was canonized on July 25, 1950 by Pope Pius XII.

Prayer of St. Theresa of Avila

Strengthen and prepare my soul, Good Jesus, And help me do something for you.

For no one could possibly receive as much as I have and give nothing in return.

Whatever it takes, Lord, may I not come before you with empty hands, since we are rewarded according to our deeds.

Here is my life, my honor, my will:

I give all to you. Do with me what you will.

I can do little, but approaching you I can do all things, if you do not leave me.
