Chair of St. Peter, February
22
In Ancient Rome, families remembered
their dead relatives and friends at a feast during the latter
part of February in which an empty chair represented their deceased.
Since the early Christians did not know the date of St. Peter's
death they remembered him with a feast around his empty chair
on February 22.
Later, the Church would see the
Chair of St. Peter as a symbol of his authority as the first
Bishop of both Rome and Antioch. It was to Peter that Jesus said,
"I have prayed for you, Peter, that your faith may not fail;
and when you have turned to me, you must strengthen the faith
of your brothers and sisters."
Father, you have built you Church on Peter's confession of
faith. May nothing weaken your gift of faith and love.
Jesus blessed the Sacrament of
Marriage in Cana of Galilee. We pray for the married couples
and for those who seek marriage in the Catholic Church:
Dear Lord,
We pray for all married couples,
that they may be inspired to make their relationship a priority
in their lives.
We pray for all married couples,
that they may turn to You, Lord, for help with any problems that
they face.
We pray for all married couples,
that when their relationship needs mending, they may claim the
special graces of forgiveness and healing, with which you have
blessed the Sacrament of Matrimony at Cana of Galilee. Amen.
Prayer
to keep a true Lent
Is this a fast, to keep the larder
lean and clean from fat of veal and sheep?
Is it to quit the dish of flesh, yet still to fill the platter
high with fish?
Is it to fast an hour, or ragged to go, or show a down-cast look
and sour?
No this is a Fast to dole thy sheaf or wheat and meat unto the
hungry soul.
To show a heart grief rent; to starve they sin, not bin, and
that's to keep thy Lent. |
