Prayer
for Vocations, February 2004
Heavenly Father, it is your will
that all people and nations should come to know your love and
truth. In your great kindness, look upon your people, and send
them your Holy Spirit. Inspired by His wisdom and knowledge,
may they feel the urgency of the call of Jesus:
"Come follow me." May
many dedicate their lives to you, in the service of others, especially
as priests, brothers, sisters, and committed lay people.
Lord, lend me the courage everyday and trust in You to go my
way, inspiring me with confidence in your sustaining providence.
Our Lady of Lourdes, February
11
The Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette
Soubiroux from a cave near Lourdes, France in 1858. From February
11 to July 16, the young peasant girl saw "the Lady dressed
in white" about eighteen times. Mary told her to pray for
sinners and to have a Church built on that spot. When Bernadette
asked her who she was, she replied, "I am the Immaculate
Conception." Today the great shrine of Lourdes is a sacred
place where pilgrims gather from all the world for prayer, healing,
and a renewal of faith.
Message of His Holiness
Pope John Paul II for the 12th World Day of the Sick, February
11, 2004
The World Day of the Sick, an
event held on different continent each year takes on a singular
meaning this time. Indeed, it will take place in Lourdes, France,
site of the apparition of the Blessed Virgin on February 11,
1858, which since that time has become the destination of many
pilgrimages.
Our Lady wished to demonstrate
her maternal love, especially towards the suffering and the sick.
This shrine was chosen because in 2004 is the Anniversary of
the proclamation of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception. On
that site, since the day of the apparition to Bernadette Soubirous,
Mary has "healed" pain and sickness, also restoring
many of her sons and daughters to health of body.
She has worked much more surprising
miracles, however, in the souls of believers, preparing them
for the encounter with her Son Jesus, the authentic answer to
the deepest expectations of the human heart.
In the Apostolic Letter in 1984,
I noted that suffering belongs to the ups and downs of men and
women throughout history, who must learn to accept and go beyond
it. And yet how can they, if not thanks to the Cross of Christ?
From the paradox of the Cross springs the answer to our most
worrying questions. Christ suffers for us. He takes upon himself
the sufferings of everyone and redeems them. Christ suffers with
us, enabling us to share our pain with him.
From the Vatican,
