Sunday of the Priests

Gospel:

Luke 12: 42 - 48

Readings:

1 Timothy 4:6 - 16

"Who then is the faithful and prudent manager?" He is the one who knows that the Master is coming undoubtedly. He is the one who also knows that what he does now will be questioned later by the Master.

The honour of the servant depends on the way he performs his duties, "Blessed is that slave whom his master will find at work when he arrives." The prudent servant the one who lives and acts according to the knowledge that his Master is coming so he changes his human relations and behaviour daily.

The prudent servant is the one who keeps watch during the night so the coming of the Master won't surprise him. Instead it will mean for him that the promise of the Lord is going to be done as promised. We are drowning in the earthly materialism that covers us in a way that makes us forget what we can't see and consequently eternity.

We are facing the danger of letting ourselves go into the flow of money, authority, power and desire. God is inviting us to fight against the theory of: being powerful is having authority.

The Master who is absent now will come soon. The power or wealth won't help us then. This was the advice given by St. Paul to his disciple because the service asks for courage to train ourselves to have piety and perseverance to reach what God is expecting from us.

The Presentation of Jesus, February 2

Forty days after his birth, Jesus was presented in the temple by Mary and Joseph to fulfill Jewish Law. There he was recognized by Simeon and Anna, who were waiting for the coming Messiah.

Simeon was just and pious, and awaited the consolation of Israel. It was revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not experience death until he had seen the Anointed of the Lord.

He came to the temple now, inspired by the Spirit; and when the parents brought in the child to perform for him the customary ritual of the Law, he took him in his arms and blessed God in these words:

Now, Master, you can dismiss your servant in peace; you have fulfilled your word. For my eyes have witnessed your saving deed displayed for all the peoples to see: A revealing light to the Gentiles, the glory of the people Israel."

This feast, celebrated by the Christian Churches of East and West at an early date, has also been called "Candlemas Day" because candles are blessed and lighted this day on which Simeon called Jesus "a light to the Gentiles."
