Sunday of the Announcement to Joseph

“God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, ‘The one who is righteous will live by faith’.”
(Matthew 1:20)

Gospel:

Matthew, 1: 1– 17

Readings:

Romans 1:1 – 12

The Sunday of the Genealogy comes directly before Christmas. On this day, the Church remembers the entrance of Jesus into the history of humanity and through a specific genealogy. Jesus is a complete and whole man and at the same time he is the Saviour.

All previous generations prepared consciously or unconsciously for Jesus’ coming. The genealogy of Jesus, as mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew was a series of repetitions until the he reaches Joseph the husband of Mary.

At this point, an incident occurred to change the history. Joseph was not the father of Jesus. He is only the “Husband of Mary of whom Jesus was born.” The genealogy is directed to Jesus. He doesn’t belong to this genealogy without Jesus who wasn’t his biological father but his adoptive father.

Jesus is unique because his biological father is unknown to humankind. To Mary and Joseph, he is the Son of God. Jesus enters the history of humanity, adopts it and organizes it: three eras, each one of them contains fourteen generations which all end with Jesus.

With Jesus, the promise to Abraham was kept. With Jesus, this long history becomes a history of salvation for all humanity who was eager to be saved.

St. John the Apostle, Apostle & Evangelist

St. John the Apostle, Apostle & Evangelist

St. John was born in Galilee, the son of Zebedee the fishermen. Along with his brother St. James the Great, he was called by Jesus to be one of his closest disciples.

He witnessed the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor and Jesus’ agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. As the “disciple whom Jesus loved”, John rested his head on the Lord’s breast at the Last Supper and was the only one to stand with Mary beneath the Cross on Calvary. Jesus committed John to his mother’s care, “Woman, behold your son,” and in turn gave Mary to him as his mother, “Son, behold your mother.”

On Easter Sunday, John ran with Peter to see the empty tomb and believed that Christ was risen from the dead. He was a founder of the Church at Jerusalem after some years went to Ephesus in Asia Minor. Here, according to tradition, he lived with Mary until her death and authored the great Gospel and Epistles that bear his name. He died at Ephesus when he was about ninety four years old.

Advent Prayer

Help us remember the birth of Jesus that we may share in the song of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and worship of the wise men. Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world. Let kindness come with every greeting.

Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings, and teach us to be merry with clear hearts. May the Christmas day make us happy to be thy children, to forgive and be forgiven for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
