Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor."

(Luke 4:19)

Gospel:

Luke 4: 14 - 21

Readings:

Ephesians 2: 13 - 17

Jesus lived in Nazareth for thirty years, "He grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him." Jesus was known from everyone close to Him: the people of His town and His relatives whom He shared with their joy and their sorrow.

He was with them during times of hardship and grief. He was with them, from them and for them. They were used to see him in the synagogues, especially on the Sabbath when he used to come as a faithful to participate in prayer and to listen to the word of God with all the faithful of Nazareth.

There is no doubt that the people of Nazareth recognized his talents. Jesus came from a modest family. He was the only child of a woman who became a widow very early in her life, even though Jesus learned the faith from the teachers in his town. He became capable of explaining the Word of God.

Young men from other towns became his disciples; they called him Teacher. The people of Nazareth were the first ones to be amazed by Jesus. They hoped in him to show the true identity of their town, which was famous by "nothing good comes from it."

The main worry of the people of Nazareth was to provide a living not to live according to God's laws. For this reason, they expected a lot from Jesus especially his friends and relatives. What was the image they had of this hopeful man? What was the dream they hoped to become true in their town of bad reputation?

St. Clare, Virgin, August 11

St. Clare was born at Assisi, Italy, in 1193. When she was eighteen, St. Francis was preaching in Assisi and his words greatly inspired her. In 1212, on Palm Sunday, she ran away from home and went to Portiuncula, where Francis lived.

He met her at the Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels, cut off her hair, and gave her a sackcloth held together by a cord. She went to live in the Benedictine Convent of St. Paul near Bastia. Her family greatly objected, but their objections fell on deaf ears. In 1215, Clare, along with her sister, mother and other companions, went to live in a convent.

Clare was appointed superior of the congregation by St. Francis and this is considered to be the origin of the Poor Clares. They adopted a severe life of poverty, silence and austerity. Clare was superior of the order for over forty years. She died at the convent of San Damiano in 1253.

Set your mind before the mirror of eternity!
Your soul before the brightness of glory!
Your heart before the divine presence, and be transformed totally into the image of God through contemplation. Then you too may feel what his friends feel as they taste the hidden sweetness God has kept from the beginning for those who love him.

Prayer

We pray, Lord that you be our helper and protector.
Deliver those of us in distress; raise up the fallen, turn your face to the needy.

Heal the sick, bring back the erring, feed the hungry, ransom our prisoners
Help the weak to their feet.

"Epistle to the Corinthians"
