Ninth Sunday After Pentecost

“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.”

(Matthew 12:30)

Gospel:

Matthew 12: 24 – 32

Readings:

2 Thessalonians 2: 13 – 17

Today’s Gospel draws the attention to the blasphemy against the Spirit. Before the miracles performed by Jesus, the people questioned his identity.

The Pharisees confirmed that Jesus could only cast demons by beelzebul the ruler of the demons. Jesus used the picture of the kingdom divided against itself to verify that the kingdom of beelzebul was not demolished and the proof is the role played by the Pharisees. Jesus casts out demons by the power of God.

Blasphemy against the Spirit is being adamant on refusing the work of the Holy Spirit through Jesus. The faithful cannot reach the level of “blasphemy against the Spirit” because sometimes he goes through times of doubt. The faithful could never reach the final confirmation that Jesus works by beelzebul’s power.

Therefore, the sins of the faithful will be forgiven because he did not know how to abstain himself from them. The sins of those who speak blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven because by doing so, the faithful will refuse the only forgiveness from the one and only Saviour Jesus Christ.

The Transfiguration of Jesus, August 6th

The Divinity of Christ was made manifest to Sts. Peter, James and John when Jesus appeared before them on Mount Tabor and his face and clothing shone radiantly. His appearance before the apostles was a confirmation to them of his relation to the Church and his role as the Son of God.

A feast in honor of the Transfiguration has been celebrated in the Christian churches of the East since the fifth century. In the Middle Ages, as interest grew in the Holy Land and the various sites connected with the life of Jesus, this feast was established in the Western Roman Empire.

Lord Jesus Christ,
Through your Transfiguration on the Mount, strengthen our hearts lest they be broken by the scandal of the Cross.

Enlightened by your grace, may we share in the brightness of your glory.

Prayer of St. Clare

Set your mind before the mirror of eternity! Your soul before the brightness of glory!

Your heart before the divine presence, and be transformed totally into the image of God through contemplation.

Then you too may feel what his friends feel as they taste the hidden sweetness God has kept from the beginning for those who love him.
