Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Gospel: John 3: 1 - 8

Readings: Romans 8: 1 - 6

In today's Gospel, Nicodemus came to Jesus after seeing that the signs performed by him are a lesson from God. His knowledge stayed superficial because Nicodemus focused on the human's power to discover this divine power. Jesus' answers however changed the meaning of the question bringing it up to the spiritual level.

Jesus' answers focused on "No one can enter the kingdom of heaven without being born of water and Spirit…" instead of "How can anyone…" Jesus repeated the issue of "Born from the Spirit" four times in today's Gospel. What is this "Birth from the Spirit" so important to enter the Kingdom of God? Is it the Baptism? It is the continuous Baptism present always in the faithful's life.

The Sacrament of Baptism is not some kind of magic, meaning it allows anyone baptized to enter the kingdom. Being born from the Spirit is to live the request of the Baptism in a constant way to indicate that the faithful continues to accept the Spirit. Being born from the Spirit as Jesus invited us to do, is not abandoning the flesh. It is being open to spiritual matters. Being committed to Jesus who united the flesh and the Spirit allows the faithful to become the children of the Lord.

The Birth of Mary
September 8

Along with the birth of Jesus and St. John the Baptist, Mary's birth has been celebrated by the Church from early times. In fourth-century Jerusalem a feast at her birth was celebrated at the Church of St. Ann, probably inspiring the Church of Rome also to celebrate too, this event. Mary's birth is seen always as part of God's plan for the salvation of the world through Jesus Christ.

O Mary, you are blessed,
For the mysteries of the prophets are fulfilled in you. You were in the burning bush and in the cloud that Moses saw;You were on the ladder rising up to heaven that Ezekiel saw; You were in the Ark of the Covenant that David saw.
At your birth these mysteries are fulfilled.
Glory to the Father, who sent his only Son through you.
