Fourth Sunday after the Holy Cross

Gospel:

Matthew 24: 45 - 51

Readings:

1 Thessalonians 5: 1 - 11

After being asked by the disciples about the end of days, Jesus transferred their concern from when to how to prepare for it.

Today's Gospel focuses on two attributes for the servants: faithful - wise servant and the evil servant. In today's Gospel, the servant seems to know his master's intentions: service of those in his household.

The two qualifications attributed to the servants give us a clear idea on the way they both deal with the coming of the Lord: the faithful one continues his work; the evil one does the opposite of his master's wishes.

The master's sudden arrival for the evil servant was not unexpected for the faithful one because he lives prepared. The master is fair; he only asks the servant to do his job. We ought to know that we, as faithful people, are invited to be servants of the master.

We know, by being Christians, we walk behind Jesus Christ our master; we know hat his wish is to start in love and end in keeping watch over those in his household. Jesus depends on us to continue his personal work.

We are honored to do Jesus' work which is not limited to one time but it expands to the length of our lives. Continuing his work shouldn't be because of his sudden arrival but because we love the master and we want to do his will.

St. Luke, (First Century) Evangelist
October 18

Born of a pagan family, St. Luke became a convert to the Christian faith. He accompanied St. Paul on his second missionary journey and was with the apostle during the final imprisonment in Rome.

Paul call him "my dear friend Luke" in one of his epistles. Luke compiled the third Gospel. He describes at length the infancy of Jesus and emphasizes the Lord's prayerfulness and his mercy.

The great parable of the Prodigal Son is found in his Gospel. In the Acts of the Apostles Luke relates the beginnings of the infant Church as it develops under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

One tradition says that Luke died at Boeotia, in Greece, at the age of eighty-four; He is patron of painters and physicians. In art he is represented by an ox because he begins his Gospel with the account of the priest Zachary sacrificing in the temple.
