Sunday of the Consecration of the Church
Gospel: Luke 1: 1 - 25
Readings: Romans 4: 13 - 25 After starting the walk of consecration and renewal, and after taking off the old and wearing the new, the Church enters today the world of announcements. The good news do not start with Jesus but with John the Baptist. This first announcement prepares us for the great announcement. God's promise is kept. His promise is realized.
St. Luke mentioned in the beginning of the Gospel that Elizabeth was barren. We notice that Zechariah and his wife were together in this situation which they can't surpass, because they were both old of age. During that period of time, being barren was thought to be the consequence of sins. The woman who doesn't have a child lived in disgrace because every woman waited eagerly to bear the Messiah.
This was the point of view of people of that era. God's point of view was different. This family was not the fruit of rage or revenge. God himself remembered the father in his mercy by sending his angel to give the greatest news of all. He also remembered the mother in love.
She bore a child and kept it a secret because the greatest joys are lived in silence. This family was not barren any longer but fertile. This fertility wasn't only material but spiritual also. John was not a usual child. He was the closest image to Jesus. He grew like him in wisdom and intelligence. The hand of the Lord was with him.

Presentation of Mary in the Temple November 21st
It occurred, according to tradition, around 13 B.C. Saints Joachim and Ann, Mary's parents, present their daughter to the temple priest Zechariah, who was the husband of Elizabeth, who was a cousin of Mary. He would later become the father of St. John the Baptist. This scene of the presentation of Mary in the temple, which was like a boarding school for her where she learned about Jewish life, happened when Mary was just 3 years old. There she stayed in the temple, in the cloister of the virgins, praying and adoring God until she reached the age of 14.
