St Anthony's Parish - Sunday June 29th, 2003
Third Sunday after Pentecost Gospel: John 15: 26, 16:4
Readings: 1 Corinthians 2: 6 - 11
When Jesus said to his disciples that he was soon returning to his Father who sent him, they were very distressed. The absence of Jesus from the hearts will fill the souls with emptiness, sadness and pain. Jesus is the life, resurrection, happiness and the light of the world.
Whoever loses him, will lose everything. Jesus felt their pain and he promised them to send them the Spirit to fill them with his graces and clear their consciences. In today's Gospel, Jesus informs the disciples about what will happen to them after they were witnesses to his life. Jesus will send them the Spirit because the Spirit testified on his behalf too. The Holy Spirit is no stranger to Jesus. He is with God and Jesus one God.
Whatever is known by God is also known by the Spirit. We need the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth which is lost these days. The Spirit can't find a place to dwell in many hearts, because people are only interested in earthly things. Let us pray to God to send his Spirit to change the face of the earth by giving us the strength to answer his call and carry the Cross and shame of Jesus. By doing so, we will be worthy to be called God's Children.
