Fifth Sunday after Resurrection Readings: Colossians, 2: 6 - 15
Gospel: John, 20: 19-25
This Sunday, we listen to St. Paul saying to the Colossians, "You were buried with Jesus in Baptism; you were also raised with him." God's Presence require faith not doubt from his disciples, apostles and all those who believe in him, including John, Thomas, the disciples of Emmaus.
After Jesus was dead and buried, the disciples felt like orphans, like sheep without a shepherd. They were dominated by sadness and disappointment. They left everything and followed him. Just when they lost hope, and being behind closed doors, they see Jesus with them, showing them his hands and feet returning hope to their aching hearts. In the Acts of the Apostles, they chose Matthews to replace Judas the traitor who delivered Jesus to death. By doing so, the number was complete; the Church became complete and able to continue the work of Jesus after he was out of sight and covered by a cloud.
The Church continues Jesus' work through the Sacraments. Jesus continues to allow us to share in his banquet of bread, wine and forgiveness he gives to the apostles. Jesus appeared to his disciples giving them peace, joy and forgiveness not for a special time or age but forever. The Church will carry his holy wounds bearing witness to his presence in the world.
