The Sunday of the Genealogy comes
directly before Christmas. On this day, the Church remembers
the entrance of Jesus into the history of humanity and through
a specific genealogy. Jesus is a complete and whole man and at
the same time he is the Saviour.
All previous generations prepared
consciously or unconsciously for Jesus' coming. The genealogy
of Jesus, as mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew was a series
of repetitions until he reaches Joseph the husband of Mary.
At this point, something happens
to change the history. Joseph was not the father of Jesus. He
is only the "Husband of Mary of whom Jesus was born."
The genealogy is directed to Jesus. He doesn't belong to this
genealogy without Joseph who wasn't his biological father but
his adoptive father.
Jesus is unique because his biological
father is unknown to human kind. For Mary and Joseph he is the
Son of God. Jesus enters the history of humanity, adopts it and
organizes it: three generations which all end with Jesus. By
Jesus, the promise to Abraham was kept.
With Jesus this long history
becomes a history of salvation for all humanity who was eager
to be saved. |

Advent Prayer
Help us remember the birth of
Jesus, that we may share in the song of the angels the gladness
of the shepherds and worship of the wise men. Close the door
of hate and open the door of love all over the world.
Let kindness come with every
greeting. Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings,
and teach us to be merry with clear hearts. May the Christmas
morning make us happy to be thy children, and Christmas evening
bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts, forgiving and forgiven
for Jesus' sake. Amen.
St.
John the Apostle, December 27
St. John was born in Galilee,
the son of Zebedee the fisherman. Along with his brother, St.
James the Great, he was called by Jesus to be one of his closest
disciples.
He witnessed the Transfiguration
on Mount Tabor and Jesus' agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.
As the "disciple whom Jesus loved," John rested his
head on the Lord's breast at the Last Supper and was the only
one to stand with Mary beneath the Cross on Calvary.
As an old man, he would repeat
to those he met, "My little children, love one another."
When someone asked him why he repeated these same words over
and over, he replied, "Because it is the Lord's teaching,
and if you keep it you do enough." He died at Ephesus when
he was about ninety-four years old.
This is what we proclaim to you:
what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have
seen with our eyes, what we have looked upon and our hands have
touched we speak of the word of life. 1 Jn.1 |
