Third Sunday after Epiphany

Readings: 2, Corinthians, 4:1-15

Gospel: John, 5:31-47 (English & Lebanese):

The Father asked Jesus to complete the works that he has done. The scriptures and the works of love we complete testify to the truth. The Lamb of God is the light of the world, he is the wisdom of the Lord and his holy temple. He is the one who declared himself the Son of the Father. He does his works through him and in him. Jesus does his Father's works, the Father who testifies to the truth. John the Baptist and Moses testify to the truth too. John testified saying: "He is the burning and shining lamp."

The Jews rejoiced in his testimony for an hour. All the other testimonies, from Moses to all the other prophets, are incomplete compared to the testimony of the Father on behalf of the Son, and the testimony of his works, including the Jews who ask for glory from one another instead of asking the Lord. They live according to the world's logic. They govern according to the flesh. They don't love; they don't listen to God's works. They don't listen; they don't see; they don't walk with Jesus until the end of the journey which is the Cross.

How do we look at Jesus' works in the Bible, in our lives, to shine in our hearts. Do we ask that God be glorified in us, or do we ask for glory from people; do we rejoice in the light of John or Moses or any other earthly light for a while, or do we strive to Jesus' light, the light that doesn't burn out? Give us Jesus, to testify on your behalf so you could testify on our behalf in front of your heavenly Father.

St. Timothy and St. Titus

(First Century, Bishops, January 26)

St. Timothy and St. Titus were co-workers of St. Paul in spreading the Gospel to the Gentile world. As he is described in St. Paul's letters, Timothy was young and timid by nature. He was born in Lystra, in Asia Minor. Timothy was converted to Christianity by Paul about the year 47. Paul had deep affection for young Timothy and also encouraged him to be unswerving in his ministry.

He was with St. Paul on many of his journeys and was imprisoned with him in Rome. Tradition reports that Timothy was martyred under Emperor Nerva in 97. St. Titus was converted by Paul and also was considered to be one of his closest associates. His solid faith, zeal, and capacity for administration prompted Paul to entrust to him the care of a number of churches in Corinth.

Titus was ordained Bishop of Crete by Paul and accompanied him to the Council of Jerusalem. About 65, Paul wrote Titus a letter from Macedonia concerning the spiritual administration of the Christian community in Crete. Titus died at Crete at the age of ninety-three.

The Spirit God has given us is no cowardly spirit, but one that makes us strong, loving and wise. (2 Timothy 1)
