First Sunday after Epiphany

Readings: Galatians, 1:11-17

Gospel: John, 1:29-42 (English & Lebanese)

We celebrate today the manifestation of Jesus to John the Baptist after we celebrated the Epiphany by the declaration of the secret of Jesus to the people. John declared the true identity of Jesus to his disciples by talking about him and being witness to the depth of his teachings. John notices that the One who came after him in time was before him in eternity. John also declares that Jesus is the one who will carry the sins of mankind because He is the Son of God.

This testimony was brought to us by John the beloved disciple who talked about Jesus the Word of God in the beginning of his Gospel. God created mankind as His picture, which was pale and unclear until the manifestation of the Son who developed a new picture of mankind. John the Baptist who consecrated his life to talk publicly about sin and sinners, will cry out with the enthusiasm of a prophet: "This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world."

St. Anthony the Great
Abbot, 250-356

St. Anthony was born in the village of Koman, Upper Egypt in 250. He was born into a wealthy Christian Family, and when his parents died in 269, he and his sister were left alone. About six months after his parents' deaths, while in Church, he heard the words of the Gospel: "If you will be perfect, go sell all you have, and give to the poor; and come, follow me and you will have treasure in heaven." Anthony left as if God were speaking directly to him. He immediately left the Church and gave all his property to the poor people of his village. Then, after providing for his sister, he left home to follow Christ. He chose to live in a deserted place not far from Koman, where he devoted himself to prayer and work with his hands.

About 285, Anthony moved and settled on the top of a mountain where he lived in solitude for nearly twenty years. In the desert, Anthony faced his fears, his disappointments, his weariness and his sins. Though the devil tempted him, Anthony became a stronger person. People from all over Egypt and throughout the world heard of this holy man living in the desert. Thousand of them came to his door to see him and ask his advice. Some adopted his life style and many became monks. As a result, Anthony is called the Father of Monasticism. In 355, Anthony returned to Alexandria to combat Arianism. He died in 356 on Mt. Kolzim.

God of truth, may we hear your word, and do your will.

Unfailing Prayer to ST. Anthony of Padua

O Holy Saint Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love of God and charity for his creatures, made you worthy, when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Encouraged by this thought, I want to implore you to obtain for me (request). O gentle and loving Saint Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the Sweet infant Jesus, the One who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours.

Amen.
