SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE HOLY CROSS

Readings: 1 Corinthians 15:19-34

Gospel: Matthew 24:23-31 (English & Lebanese):

The Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, popular in the Middle Ages, follows the feast of Mary's birth on September 8. It recalls the special bond between Jesus and Mary and reminds us of the torment and suffering or Christ. Mary suffered greatly as the mother of God, and the pain she felt was real.

The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows recalls the succession of Sorrows Mary experienced during her life: The prophecy she heard from Simeon in the Temple, the flight into Egypt, the three-day loss of Jesus on the pilgimage to Jerusalem, meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, the hours she stood beneath the cross, the removal of Jesus from the Cross, and the burial of Jesus in a tomb.

Holy Mother, Pierce me through; In my heart each wound renew of my Saviour crucified.

Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael
September 29

Holy Scripture speaks of angels as ministers of God in human affairs. St. Michael defends the honor of God against Satan. St. Gabriel announced to Mary the coming of Jesus. St. Raphael guided Tobias on his journey and brought healing to Tobit, his blind father.

As servants of God, the angels are instruments of God's hidden providence. They preserve us from harm, give God's wisdom and strength to humanity, and accompany us on our Journey through life.

We Thank you, Lord, with all our hearts;
In the presence of your angels we bless you.
