ST. PETER CLAVER
September 9
St. Peter Claver was born at Verdu, in Catalonia, Spain, in 1580.
He was educated at the Unversity of Bacelona and decided to
enter the Society of Jesus. He entered the novitiate of Tarragona
in 1601 and was sent to the College of Montesione at Palma in
Majorca. While there, he cane under the tutelage of St. Alphonsus
Rodriguez and requested to be sent as a missionary to the New
World to minister to the neglected.
He went to Cartagena, in Colombia,
south America, in 1610 and was ordained there in 1615. Peter
worked with Fr. Alfonso de Sandoval, a great missionary among
the black slaves, and declared himself "the slave of the
blacks forever." Cartagena was one of the principal centers
of the slave trade, and nearly one thousand slaves passed through
its port every month.
Peter spent almost forty years
serving the black slaves who came on slave ships to Cartagena
before being sent to work at the plantations and mines in the
area. It is said that he baptized nearly 300,000 slaves during
his years in Cartagena. He brought food, clothing and encouragement
to these poor people in their inhuman confinement and squalid
conditions.
Many were instructed in the Catholic
faith, and Peter never turned away from their suffering or the
revolting conditions of their captivity. He died at Cartagena
on September 8, 1654, and the entire city, along with its slave
population, mourned his passing. In 1896, Pope Leo XIII declared
him the patron of all missionary work among blacks. |
