Fifth Sunday After the Holy Cross Readings: Philippians 2:12-18
Gospel: Matthew, 25:1-13(English & Lebanese):
On the sixth Sunday after the Holy Cross, today we listen to the Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids: Five of them were wise and five were foolish. We listen to ST. Paul warning the Philippians: "Brothers, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling Shine like stars in the world." Do we know that we were invited to be the light in people's way? They were ten bridesmaids carrying lamps in their hands. All these information help us paint a beautiful picture about the kingdom, which resembles a wedding banquet. We know that the bridesmaids are in fact the faithful community who wait for the coming of the Bridegroom and Lord. Others explain: the Bridesmaids represent the disciples who wait for the Messiah with love and anticipation. The bridesmaids of the Gospel held their lamps. We can say that those lamps, unworthy to be put under the bushel basket but on the lampstand, were an indication of witnessing of Jesus' true love. The oil is that of happiness when meeting a loved one after a long time. It also means that we should bear witness to God's coming. The number ten symbolizes the fingers of the hand, which is the base of all human work.
