FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Readings: 1 Corinthians 14:1-5

Gospel: John 16:12-15 (English & Lebanese):

We reached the end of the Spirit's season; yet we are not finished meditating on the way he sealed us marking us as his people until the day of his coming. We were excited about his coming in Spirit on Pentecost Sunday, which has a deep impact ever since. This Spirit accompanied our ancestors of faith in their first mission of preaching and in their hearts the consoling fruits and the strength of a lawyer, and on their tongues the words of the Spirit of truth.

Today we focus on the deeds of the Spirit in the Church. He leads the Church to the complete truth and knowledge of its savior. The Spirit guides the Church to share in the wealth of the One triumphant over death and sitting gloriously on the right side of the Lord. Jesus did not tell his disciples the complete sacrament of his divinity during his mission in Galilee; the Galileans could not discover the true inspiration of their Master. He brought to them all the things he heard from the Father. His behavior in their midst was a true reflection of the Father's light and his glory full of grace and wisdom. Like each one of us, our fathers did not progress in their faith quickly but they took the slow road of Emmanuel's discovery.

Many things were said and they could not understand their meanings. Many deeds were performed in front of them and they tossed them on the side of the road of their lives. Many events passed through their lives and they did not read them. The Lord's last attempt in the temple to kick out the vendors was understood as the prophets trying to protect the house of God. If they tried to understand its deep meanings they could've read that the Nazareth's Prophet is in deed God's true temple.

The Birth of John the Baptist, June 24

The Birthday of John the Baptist, six months before the birth of Jesus, has been celebrated on June 24 from the earliest days of the Church. Jesus himself called John, who prepared the way for him by preaching, the greatest of men. A "voice in the desert," John, as the final prophet of the Old Testament, told the people of his time that their Lord was near.

In the wastelands of Judea, people from all ranks of society came to hear John and their hearts were moved by his call to repent. Early commentators never failed to note that after June 24, the feast of John the Baptist, the sun's light begins to decrease until December 25, the birth of Jesus, when the light of the sun increases again.
