- Gospel: John 15:26, 16:4 (English & Lebanese):
When Jesus told his disciples that he would leave them soon to
return to his Father, sadness filled their hearts. Jesus' absence
from the soul will fill it with sadness and sorrow because Jesus
is the life, resurrection, happiness, and the light of the world.
Whoever loses Jesus will lose everything. Jesus felt bad, so
he promised to send them the Advocate, to purify their consciences
and fill them with grace. Jesus tells his disciples in today's
Gospel what is going to happen to them.
-
- He reveals for the witnesses of truth that he wants to send
the Holy Spirit to be with them, because the Advocate testified
for him too. The Spirit is not a stranger from Jesus, he and
the Lord are one. Whatever the Father knows, the Spirit knows
it too. We desperately need the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth,
which is lost these days. The Spirit couldn't find a home for
himself in the hearts of many people whom their hearts were hardened
by selfishness and material pleasures.
-
- We have to pray with the Church for the Spirit to come and
change the face of the earth, which won't change unless we answer
the Lord's call and carry Christ's Cross. By doing so, we deserve
his immortal glory.
-
- With all the doubt and the fear, the early Christian gave
their necks and their bodies as generous sacrifices to prove
the truth of their beliefs. The Gospel teaches us that the road
to Christ is the small door and the rough road. Jesus promised
us that God is happy to give us the kingdom. Amen.

- St. Anthony of Padua
June 13
-
- St. Anthony of Padua was born at Lisbon, Portugal, in 1195.
His surname comes from the Italian City where he lived the latter
part of his life. His parents were members of the Portuguese
nobility. His early education took place at the Cathedral at
Lisbon. At the age of fifteen, he joined the Regular Canons of
St. Augustine and was transferred to he monastery at Coimbra
two years later because of his friends' visits. At the monastery,
Anthony devoted himself to prayer and study and became a learned
scholar of the Bible.
-
- Anthony was accepted to the Franciscans in 1221. Soon after
the set out to Morocco, he was forced to return to Europe because
of illness. On his return to home, a storm drove his ship to
the shores of Italy, where he would live for the rest of his
life. A gifted preacher, Anthony was also called upon to teach
theology to his fellow Franciscans. Anthony drew large crowds
wherever he went in Italy, but his greatest success was in Padua
where the entire city flocked to hear his word and welcomed him
as another ST. Francis.
-
- After the death of Francis, Anthony became the minister provincial
of Emilia or Romagna. In 1226, he was elected as the envoy from
the general chapter to Pope Gregory IX. Soon after, he was released
from his duty so he could continue preaching. He returned to
Padua, where he preached until his death. Anthony died on June
13, 1231 at the age of 36. He is a Doctor of the Church.
