September 23, 2001 SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE HOLY CROSS Readings: 1 Corinthians , 15:19-34
Gospel: Matthew, 24: 23-31 (English & Lebanese):
This is the Second Sunday after the Holy Cross. We are focusing on the waiting for the coming of the Lord. Today, Jesus is warning us in Matthew's Gospel about false Messiahs: " 'Look, here is the Messiah!' or, 'There he is!' do not believe it." St. Paul explains in his letter to the Corinthians: "
If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are the most pitiable people of all." We hear the readings of this week pitiable of all." We hear the readings of this week focusing on being alert and the Christ, who is the firstfruits, and the strong faith in him. Did we know to recognize between the voices of Jesus and the others? Do we know how to wait, believing that God won't disappoint us? Waiting in hope is the most important phase of the Old Testament, since God promised the kingdom to Adam and Eve: "From your offspring will come the one who will destroy the serpent's head." God's mission started with his people to the land of safety.

St. Cosmas and Damian
MartyrsAccording to tradition, Sts. Cosmas and Damian were in twin brothers born in Arabia. They were doctors who lived at Aegeag, Cilicia, and ministered to the sick. Because they would not accept money for their services, they became known as "the holy money less ones." They were arrested during the persecution of Christians under the Emperor Diocletian. They were tried by Lysias, governor of Cilicia, tortured and beheaded in 303. They are buried at Cyrrhus, Syria, and many people have been cure after the praying at their shrine.
Lord, cure the sick and suffering, comfort those in pain.Top of Page
