September 09, 2001 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST Readings: Romans , 8:7-11
Gospel: John, 3: 31-36 (English & Lebanese):
The Triumph of the Cross is the end of Jesus' saving mission, and the opening of the last Liturgical time. For the next seven weeks, we remember our destiny, and what does the Spirit realize in us. It is the time to face the Judgment. "He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end." We hear the story of the grain of wheat, when it falls to the ground and dies, it produces much fruit. St. Paul explains: "The message of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." Do we know how to transform the distress into life in God? Do we know how to transform the cross of shame to the Cross of Triumph and glory? St. John presents to us the agony and passion of Jesus as the Triumph. This glory attracts people to God our Father. Jesus' death is global. It is realized here and everywhere at any time, and among any class of people.

The Triumph of the Cross
September 14St. Paul the Apostle spoke of the power of Christ's Cross. According to tradition, the Empress Helena discovered the Lord's Cross in Jerusalem on September 14, 320. Five years later, a great Church was built on Mount Calvary by Emperor Constantine to shelter the Holy Relic. Parts of the wood of the Cross were sent to the major cities of Christendom, where they were shown to the faithful on this special feast.
We worship you, O Christ, and we praise you, because by your Cross you have redeemed the world. By this holy tree you gave your people victory, and put aside the tree of our defeat.Top of Page
