SUNDAY OF THE CONSECRETION OF THE CHURCH
Readings: Hebrews, 9: 1-10

Gospel: Matthew, 16: 13-20 (English & Lebanese):

We celebrate today the Consecration of the Church. God said: "Jesus is the High Priest of all good things." St. Peter also witnessed to Jesus saying, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God." St. Paul, in his letter to the Hebrews, explains the rituals of worship in the Old Testament.

He indicated the flaws of these rituals, which won't be complete except with Jesus who sacrificed his own blood of the eternal salvation of people. The place where they kept the tablets of the Covenant, the jar containing the Manna and the staff of Aaron, was a symbol of the Body of Christ. This body is the truth, and in this body lives the trinity.

We all direct ourselves to this house, to the Church, the body of Christ. With Christ, our salvation begins. Jesus is the Messiah who came to bring salvation to the people. He is the Lord who took a human body; he lived with humans so he could bring him to higher places, to God.

In Christ, everything becomes new. Jesus sanctifies us. We become holy with Christ. The Church today, lives the Sacrament of Salvation, and works on preaching it to all. Let's grow in faith and love with others. Let's strive to sanctify ourselves in communion.

Let's be responsible in the Church with our priests, bishops and all responsible. Let's ask Jesus Christ to bless his Church and its children. May he give his Church the strength to unite everyone in faith and love, so everybody will glorify him with the Holy Spirit. Amen.

St. Matthew (First Century, Apostle and Evangelist)
November 16

The call of St. Matthew, the tax collector, to be one of the twelve apostles of Jesus is described in the Gospel, which bears his name, "Jesus saw a man named Matthew at his post where taxes were tax collectors. They were excluded from the synagogue and the temple. No good Jew would have anything to have with them.

When Jesus invited Matthew to follow him and then ate at his house, he heard the outraged comments of Capernaum's local leaders. "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?" Jesus answered simply, "Those who are well have no need of a doctor; sick people do." By calling Matthew, Jesus invited an outcast to enjoy the healing friendship of God.

Among the Evangelists he is symbolized by the figure of a man, because Matthew's Gospel begins with the human origins of Jesus. There are reports that Matthew left Judea and preached in the East, where he was martyred in Ethiopia.
